Lift For The Crypt At Sheffield Cathedral

Lift for Sheffield Cathedral

Sheffield Cathedral is the oldest building in the city. There has been a church on the site for over 1000 years. This has meant that the current building has developed over many different architectural periods. It was decided that the crypt was to be made fully accessible for wheelchair users.

Invalifts identified that their Inva Stair Riser unit would be the right solution to deal with a flight of 6 steps. The wall adjacent to the steps was recessed and so the usual wall mounting of the unit was not an option, the unit was therefore stanchion mounted by securing the stanchions into the steps directly. An existing handrail was removed in order to create the space needed, the clean handrail technology of the Inva Stair Riser allowed for this as the top rail of the unit can be used by those walking down the stairs as a handrail.

The sleek design and quiet use makes the unit a perfect fit for the cathedral. The stainless steel rails and grey platform are aesthetically pleasing and do not detract visitors eyes away from the beautiful building itself.
